Free forum hosting is a good way for people to create a forum without having to set up anything. People can also save money if they choose to use free forum hosting. However there are some cons of course when it comes to free forum hosting which is why some people don't like using it. Most hosts don't allow you to make backups of your forum, so if something happens you just have to hope the owners of the sites keep daily backups. You also can't move to self hosting if you don't have a database backup, though some free forum hosts provide you with a backup. Anyways what are your thoughts on free forum hosting? I think it's fine for those new to owning a forum and just want to get their foot in the door of owning a forum.
It's really good for people just starting out or who can't afford to get a hosting account.

I don't like them, I even avoid joining a free hosted forum unless I am paid to post or available for posting through posting package on forums where I am staff. I think it is better to start with open source software rather than free hosted options.
Some people just want to have fun. They aren't web developers so the free hosting thing appeals to them and I can't blame them.
But, as for my own opinion, I am a web developer and I find free hosting forums too limiting so I go for self-hosted free or premium options.
I use free forum hosting for my current board. I use it as a place to build resources for the hosting I'm using, which is mainly done as a hobby and a continuation of my forum resources legacy from another software that is now closed. It does have some limited capabilities, but it's something I do mostly for fun and to keep busy. Besides, I don't have the money to pay for self-hosting.
@yugi Exactly in the first time it could be for example good to try services with free forum provider but you realize that it is not profesionnal after that if you do not have domain name and paid plan
I've used a free service for a static website. It was back in the 2000s. I was creating a site for guitar lessons.
And I never tried to make forums until after I got into paid hosting. I did so because it was easy with Softalicious, an uploading software included with cPanel
Free forum hosting is not that great. The one I tried for last year nearly made me go crazy. There are ads everywhere like a promo page and site was way too slow. It was very annoying.

The hosting I use lets you have a custom domain name, and I do. However, I'm using no paid plan that the forum hosting offers. I honestly don't think you need to worry about professionalism too much if you're not running a business or a more serious niche. People have all types of free hobbies, and I see free forum hosting as no different in that respect.
@yugi Depends on the goal of forum and if it is free business or business making money
Honestly, most of them I love. I've been an avid designer/developer for ProBoards for years and I still make plugins for people for that platform. Granted, I think that place will always have a special spot in my heart as that is how I got started with forums when I was 13. Currently building my own forum software for myself to use, so no free-forum host for my current project.

I agree that they're good for people just starting out. When I used to have my own forums and was still learning, I used the free ones.
@allenafaith It is not always good. For example for ForumOtion then for example the hosting is need that only the creator could renew hosting services and not other admins.

ProBoards allowed forum owners to set permissions for staff groups to modify things like that. Or, custom domains.

For me l have plans on starting one on the free hosted forums. That is because l am very passionate about forums and that is that is one of my targets in the near future for sure for sure.
